Orangeries
From the 17th to the 19th century, buildings that
were constructed with a “classicizing” form of architecture
and typically found on the grounds of more elite and fashionable
homes.
Merchants
began importing numerous varieties of citrus trees specifically
banana, orange, and pomegranate trees.
The original use of these structures is evidenced by the name
orangery or
orangeries in that they were similar to
conservatories
or greenhouses and protected citrus trees from the harsh winter
climate.
The earlier orangeries were not as
lavish as the ones that are being constructed today. There was
no cooling or heating, and when the weather was cold, it was not
uncommon to build an open fire within the building’s confines.
Modern day orangeries
Since their beginnings, orangeries have continually been developed and
improved upon and are some of the most beautiful home additions
that you will find anywhere.
They add beauty, luxury, and a unique style of
construction to any home.
Once you spend time in one, you will most likely begin
considering how you can add one of these picturesque structures
to your own property.
Additionally, the advancements and innovations in
modern glass design
and manufacturing standards has witnessed a shift in the
functionality of these structures from a mere conservatory-like
addition to year round living quarters that are quite luxurious.
Not only will you be adding a piece of elegance to your
home that your neighbours will no doubt envy, an orangery will
increase the value of your home as well.
A few bits of advice
If you are considering the addition of an orangery to your property, it is
advisable that you deal with contractors who are well-versed in
conservatory and orangery construction and design.
They are the experts at the ideal structure that will
compliment your property as well as being able to work with the
space that is available for this type of construction.
Be sure that you search for a contractor that has been in
the industry for a considerable length of time and has a list of
customer testimonials.
You will want to have your orangery constructed from the finest of
hardwoods whenever possible as these are considerably more
durable than other woods and construction materials.
Another consideration is the selection of a contractor
who is environmentally responsible and uses only renewable or
sustainable resources. Though there are many
hardwood conservatories
and
orangeries contractors, it is best to go with one who has
years of experience and excellent referrals.

Hardwood Conservatories
Typically found
on larger residential properties or in public parks,
conservatories became fashionable additions to the grounds and
homes of the well-to-do over 4 centuries ago.
The earliest known conservatory dates back to
Padua,
Italy in 1545.
However, the structure was actually found to be another
form of conservatory known as an “orangery”, a windowed
structure that was employed for protecting citrus trees from the
harsh winters. It
wasn’t until after the end of the Eighty Years War (1648) that
adding a conservatory to your property became a fashionable
endeavour.
France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have been credited
for starting this architectural and construction trend.
During the cold winters, it was difficult to protect the
younger trees so conservatories and orangeries were constructed
in order to protect them from the harsh winter climate of those
countries. It
enabled them to not only protect them when bearing fruit but the
growers were able to cultivate the beauty and the scent of these
trees as well.
Choosing
the right conservatory
Conservatories
today are constructed from a number of materials including
hardwoods or metal for the primary structure, and glass.
Additionally, some are even being built from PVC.
Hardwood conservatories are always the most desirable if
a person has the budget for it, but one of the biggest concerns
is choosing the best contractor to do the job.
Here are some
suggestions for avoiding the disaster that could result if you
choose a contractor that is not quality oriented with their
materials or workmanship:
-
Attempt to get
referrals from family, friends, or other neighbours that
have had a conservatory or orangery built on their property
-
Develop a potential
list of contractors and begin investigating each one
-
Find out what the
permit requirements are for your project – if needed these
will be required before you begin the construction of your
hardwood conservatory
-
Now is the time to
start meeting contractors and get your first impressions by
finding out if they are courteous and pleasant, how promptly
they return your phone call, and making an appointment to
consult with them in person.
-
Inquire about the
length of time they have been in the business, can you see
examples of their work?, the type of insurance they carry,
and any other critical information
-
Meet with a reputed
contractor and obtain a detailed estimate for them to work
on your hardwood conservatory or orangery
-
Compare all the
estimates as well as the other information you have received
in order to make your choice of contractor for your project,
do not buy on price alone.
